Translation of Jacques Rouchaud’s French article
⚖️ The nine members of the Constitutional Council, the “Sages” responsible for checking that laws comply with the Constitution, receive around €15 000 gross per month.
📜 The text setting their allowance, a 1958 ordinance, aligns it with the highest state salaries: around €6 500 gross per month.
✉️ The difference comes from a never-published 2001 letter from the Secretary of State for the Budget, which created a “supplementary allowance” without a parliamentary vote.
💡 At the time, it was intended to compensate for the end of a tax benefit enjoyed by the members.
🔁 This allowance can be combined with a retirement pension.
🧾 By comparison, the President of the Republic receives €16 039 gross per month.
👇 Should we return to the amount provided for by law?
They all have a prime minister’s pension or something of that sort.
Laurent Fabius is the richest antiques dealer in the world. He owned the Louvre des Antiquaires and his ministerial position, and today he has made himself immune to all attacks from the tax authorities, and so on and so forth.
